What is required to become an inspector?

I'm just wondering what is required?

I've just been made redundant and have thought about offering my services to do simple wood repairs and fabric covering. Obviously, getting things signed off would be a pain, and might make it impractical for anything more than a bit of casual work. However, if it was possible to get signed up as a "wooden structures" and maybe "engines" inspector, I assume I could sign my work as it's done, as well as signing off other peoples work?

Do all inspectors need to be CAA qualified aircraft technicians or have a degree in aircraft engineering? Or can previous amateur experience be enough for the lower grades of inspector?
