Ron,
You can get a degree symbol on your pc by going to Programs, then finding Accessories, then look for System Tools and opening Character Map. Once there you have to select the degree symbol, then copy the symbol which can then be pasted into your text. Never tried it on Google but it works in normal documents. Let the BB know if it works. Are you back in warmer climes?

Malcolm, What you need are the ANSI codes. These can be found, for example, here: http://www.alanwood.net/demos/ansi.html
The second column from the left gives you the number you need to type (while holding the Alt key) to get the corresponding character, e.g. Alt 0233 gives you é, Alt 0215 × (you need to add zero before the number listed in this table). This gives you access to all the characters from the old character set that are not available directly from the keyboard.

...but not I think for ß as in Straße (for which you need a German keyboard), or Å as in ångström (for which a Swedish keyboard would be useful)... (There is possibly more than anyone needs to know about international keyboard layouts here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout)
