I replaced some steel spacers on the FRED undercarriage with aluminium ones that took me all day to lathe up. About 6 hours work to do it but I've saved a massive 4.5 oz!
Mt wife said that having a poo before every flight would've saved more weight.

I took advice from Mike Birchill (G-PFAF) and cut all but the last 2 exposed threads off of all the bolts and saved about another pound of weight. Strange that the FRED plans still allow commercial grade bolts, although I have changed them ALL for AN hardware for the sake of simplicity. I'm lucky to have access to a few places locally where nuts and bolts regularly fall off of the shelves and roll out of the door.
Changing from cast iron Lambretta wheels to alloy AZUSA 8 inch wheels saved 14.5 lbs per side, I kid you not!

42 grammes in wheel-half bolts. 6 bolts at 7 grammes lighter per bolt. I wonder why they supply them about 8 threads too long?

Thought those wheels would be so expensive they'd to be worth about the same as the rest of the plane
