Rotax 912-UL

Post by G-SQUO » Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:38 pm

Hi
I am thinking of buying an aircraft with the Rotax 912UL. It has 850 hours on the clock. Does anyone know if these engines are prone to requiring a top overhaul or similar at circa 800 hrs? I appreciate all engines are different but apparently the RR O-200-A I am told requires a top overhaul at around 550 hours and I was curious to know if the popular 912 would require something similar well before its TBO of 2000hrs.
This engine has been run on mogas mainly and oil has been changed on average every 80 hours, with all compressions similar at 145psi. Maybe im being over cautious but any advise would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Paul

the tbo on the engine has risen through the ages and is now at 2000 hours. I think (stand to be corrected though) that the early ones may have been down at 1000 hrs and then went up in stages to 2000 by the end of 2009. It will, therefore, be partly dependent upon the age of the particular engine and to some extent on the mods and upgrades applied to it.

Having said that, if the engine is in a permit aircraft then it may be possible to keep using it "on condition" way past the expected tbo. There are reports of 912ul engines in training aircraft running in the 3000+ hours with just routine maintenance.

Thanks for your replies gents. I tried to call Conrad but never seem to get further then the young lady who answers the phone :)
She told me that there is one 912 out there in excess of 8000 hours!
I will endeavour to speak to some Rotax minded guys tomorrow at the airfield. I offered the guy £1000 below his asking price (something for him to think about) and he refused it immediatly! A dissapointing end to a very busy and enjoyable day in the cockpit

Hi Paul, it may not be all over yet, it is definitely a buyer's market at the moment so the guy may yet come back a do a deal at your offer price. People aren't exactly queuing to buy aeroplanes at the moment.
