Cheap GPS Updates

Post by dlicheri » Sat Nov 10, 2012 2:14 pm

Does or anybody know of or has anybody used the GPS update service for older Garmin models advertised on AFORS (see link) ?

The price seems very resonable and would give my Garmin Pilot a new lease of life (I have an old 2004 database on it). I am hesitant. Is there an easy and cheaper way to update discontinued units?

I have just had two Pilot 111 units done by him. Very quick service and they seem ok. Not flown miles away but my local area is updated satisfactorily. He tells me he can do a wide range of models.

I assume you are aware that you can still update a Garmin 111 Pilot with the correct Jeppersen database from Garmin themselves, albeit for an expensive $49.95 US
Go to:- FlyGarmin.com

Alan,

I checked the garmin link. It seems that the database used is old. You are paying for a 2002 aviation database update. Hardly worth it for 49.95 ....

Alan, Could you point me to the full link for the Garmin update please? I looked into updating my Pilot III over the New Year, and the only thing I found on the Garmin website was a firmware update -- everything else said "Product discontinued". But I could have missed something! Cheers, Nick

Nick,

The site to go to is:-

https://fly.garmin.com/fly-garmin/

You need to register yourself and your unit and then it is straightfroward. I have a 2012 database in my Garmin 111 Pilot.

Nick,
It is $29.99 for a single Navigation update for a Garmin 111 Pilot.(you don't need the 'Bundle') The next update is due 10th Jan 2013. Updates are every 28days. All stilll available for the Garmin 111.

My point being why pay £20 for a copied reformatted version when you can have the genuine Jepperson update for $29.99!

Seems that updates for GPS Pilot III or any of the other supported models are actually $49.99 so £20.00 is not so bad after all.

Just had my GPS Pilot III updated as well as a 296 and no probs to report.

Why are updates so expensive ?
