Whilst Exeter radar is under maintainance, which may take up to 28 days starting 16/9/'13 (0800 utc), Exeter will have a Transponder Mandatory Zone, mode A, C and S, over an irregular shaped area - see http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/SafetyNotice2013016.pdf - it extends quite a way beyond Crediton to the West, beyond Branscombe to the East, beyond Torquay to the south, and beyond Tiverton to the North. If you can't comply with transponding A,C and S, permission required from ATC.

After a useful and informative meeting with the Exeter SATCO, David Burrows, I posted a few additional notes of clarification on how the TMZ is intended to operate from a GA perspective. The consequences for gliding operations at North Hill, just west of Dunkeswell and for hang gliding and paragliding from various sites within the TMZ have been addressed by Letters of Agreement. The Exeter TMZ was withdrawn yesterday afternoon. No major infringement issues.
