AVmap Ultra
Hi
Has anyone experience of the AVmap Ultra? Our RV7 vacuum horizon recently failed and we have to decide whether to refit a standard vacuum or electric horizon or possibly the AVmap which apparently has internal accelerometers acting as solid state gyro's.
Question is how accurate is the AVmap? Does it display 360 degrees in roll and pitch?
Is it a reasonable replacement for a conventional gyro?
Thanks

Re: AVmap Ultra
Although I have no experience regarding the Avmap I have also been doing some investigations into the various modern replacement for my vacuum driven AH.
My requirements are very basic (no aeros for example), but what is clear is you have to read each units specification very carefully. Seems all use slightly different technologies (and processing algorithms) and, therefore, have specific limitations.
You should be able to find user/installation manuals on line for all the currently available models.
Hope this helps.

Re: AVmap Ultra
When our vacuum horizon failed for the second time we ditched it and fitted a Dynon horizon which also shows heading, airspeed, slip etc.
We were able to remove vacuum pipe, regulator and pipework and have been delighted with the result.
Best wishes,
Harry Hopkins

Re: AVmap Ultra
Can a standard gyro do that? I thought they toppled, and needed caging before aeros?jacrew100 wrote:Question is how accurate is the AVmap? Does it display 360 degrees in roll and pitch?

Re: AVmap Ultra
Thank you all for your thoughts. The Dynon is good for only 30-40 degrees of bank and therefore could not be relied upon if you inadvertently went IMC. I gather the horizon display is generated purely from the GPS signal.
I am considering two types of electronic display, one being the AVmap and also the Primary Flight Display EMSIS (Kanardia).
Both are similar in appearance and offer much the same information. The Kanardia is 360 degree in pitch and roll as it too has solid state gyro's within the case. I understand the Kanardia has a very quick response but the display is a little smaller than on the AVmap. The Kanardia fits flush while the AVmap stands proud by just over 1/2".Really need to see both before I commit to see if the AVmap can equal the roll and pitch response of the Kanardia.

Re: AVmap Ultra
John, I bought an AvMap Ultra at SnF a couple of years ago and fitted it to my Jodel, replacing the old brick of an electric A/H and its inverter. The AvMap does everything it claims to, but I've not had it in any unsual attitudes to verify its aerobatic response! The standard instrument hole needed enlarging slightly but I believe the current version has a standard diameter hole and the micro SD card slot has been moved to the front of the instrument to make access easier.
