St Mawgan becomes Newquay on 1/12/08

Post by Mike Mold » Fri Nov 14, 2008 5:01 pm

Neil Harris, the SATCO at Newquay gave a short presentation to the Devon Strut meeting last night, reiterating the changes that come into effect on 1st December with the departure of the RAF. See "Amendments yet to become effective" at http://www.caa.co.uk/application.aspx?c ... l&chart=11

Very encouraging it was too! His intention is to make Newquay a centre of excellence for GA. The new civilian controllers have been recruited from either current PPLs or lasped ones and will have a policy of no bollockings over the radio, no contolled a/s other than the ATZ but with a LARS out to 60 nm radius covering Exeter, Plymouth Scilly and Chivenor from 08.00 - 22.00 hrs. Neil's own experience includes ex Heathrow tower and East Midlands (CastleDon). He was openly critical of airports applying for unnecessary CAS, has submitted a robust response to OfCom and he's a current PPL.

He'll be encouraging fly-ins, visits to the tower and generally promoting the place for GA business. There's even rumours of Air Atlantique might be relocating there.

Why is its identity code being changed from EGDG to EGHQ?

presumably it's cheaper to change the ICAO than change all the ruskis maps :)
