Favourite aircraft.

Post by Bill McCarthy » Mon Nov 24, 2008 3:02 pm

JC had stated in a previous post that he has had in the order of eighty (80) aircraft in his ownership. It would be an interesting topic if he offered comment on his top ten on pure satisfaction terms. If others have had a few, perhaps they could append their top five, say, for comparison.
For instance, one of our past presidents, in a PFA article written in the late seventies stated that the Rollason Beta rated high in his top ten, and he had flown fast jets and a whole host of others.

here goes...1. Clear leader..Vans RV4
2 Hatz Biplane
3 Citabria
4 Sonerai
5 Hiperbipe
6 Percival Prentice
7 Wassmer 52
8 Jodel1050
9 Thorpe Cw18
Cessna 150 aerobat and Auster Aiglet as runners up!
Whilst not listed in my favourites, the Evans VP1 and Luton Minor deserve a mention for actually flying much better than they look!

Bill
My top 10 are ....
Jungmann - superb ailerons, very precise in every respect.
RV6/7 - painless, quick, viceless, very happy on tarmac
Jodel 117 - very stol, cheap, also viceless (but I'm biased)
Fournier RF3 - elegant, could do with being aerobatic !
Stolp Starlet - C90 powered, a proper little hotrod.
Taylor Mono - you don't fly it, your wear it !
Banbi MCR-01 - 912 technology at its best. No vices, quick and stol.
Beagle Pup 150 - very precise, handles crosswinds with ease (but thirsty !)
Reims Rocket - A true stol 4-seat people mover, even fully loaded.
PA22 Tripacer - Much under-rated 4 seat tourer. A real bumble-bee, viceless, very reliable, and easy to fly, (once you've found the master switch !)
....But then again, I can think of another 10 !
:D

I agree with your comments on the Tripacer.
Other good aircraft that didn't make it into my top ten are Beech Muscateer, superb build quality and suppriseingly good short field performance.
Grumman Traveller, very practical(you can sleep in it), nice handling but bit of a ground hugger fully loaded.
One that would have made the top ten but I have only flown one,not owned one is the Stampe.
