Homebuilt kit from France

I am planning on starting a homebuild project. I am pretty certain that I would like to build an RV9, but given the current climate with the £ and the $, I not so sure I can afford it now. So I am contemplating some alternatives. One of which is the Europa XS( but a bit low on Payload). Another alternative I have looked at a Dyn Aero MCR4S (4 place version of the MCR1), but this is not authorised for construction in the UK. So, here is my question, could I go to the factory and build this in their workshop programme, register this as an F reg. but keep it in the UK, and would that then be legal (like having an N reg.)?

The optimist in me says that now we are all controlled by Europe the answer should be yes but the pessimist says that knowing we are not on a level playingfield the answer will be no because the aircraft is amateur built. :cry:

Hi Martin,

No you cannot do this. You would be limited to 28days in the UK with an F reg permit aircraft. If you really wanted to go this way then you could try to get the MCR Pickup approved. This would be far less work than getting the 4 seater approved, but would have the same payload.

How much payload / endurance do you need?

Thanks for the reply. My mission payload would be about 300-320 Kg including fuel.
What is the MCR Pickup? I'm not familiar with this.

Hi Martin, might be a bit cantankerous but an appeal to the European Courts might be needed to shake the CAA.

You'd certainly have to weave some magic if you think the European court is going to help you Merlin. Homebuilts are not regulated by EASA, they are regulated by the National Airworthiness Authorities within Annex 11. That means the CAA, who of course delegate the authority to LAA as far as Approvals.
You would be better off going with something that is already approved, say the Jabiru J430, which would give you the payload you want and would probably work out cheaper than a Dyn Aero. Don't forget the Euro has beaten the crap out of the pound pretty much the same as the dollar has!

Watching the Euro, That's what I've been thinking just lately, looks like I'm swaying towards the Europa XS Tri again!!!!
