The solution is relatively simple.
On the current version of PHPBB you can use the Security Question Modification. This is effective at preventing bots from registering.

You then set up a separate Users Group for Members and dump all of the existing registered users (who should all be members) into that group.

You set Forum permissions so that only users who are members of the Members Group- can post to the normal Forums.

You set Forum Permissions that allow Registered Users to post to the Fly Ins Forum.

That way people who are not members have to register before they can post to the Fly Ins Forum, and if it's an automated registration the Security Question Mod will prevent the bot from registering.

If you update to the current version of PHPBB you can't use the Security Question Mod as it doesn't work on the new version, however a similar effect can be achieved using a mandatory custom field. If you want to see this working try registering on www.joinaopa.com/forum
You'll be asked a question that you will know the answer to but that a bot won't.

Mike,

Could you do that for the LAA if they ask ?

Because they have already stated they haven't the manpower to spare. It's not solutions, so much as competent effort they seek.

Me ? I don't have the know how to help !

Mike

I have asissted in the past and would be happy to do so again, however there are some aspects of the current set-up that are customised (i.e. non-standard) and I have suggested to the Office that the business of upgrading the software version is probably best done by whoever set it up in the first place. If that's not possible I don't mind having a go subject to the usual caveats.
