medical renewal fees

Post by johnM » Mon Jun 22, 2009 3:41 pm

I live in the Reigate area and the cheapest class 2 renewal with ecg that I have found is about £150.

Is that as good as it gets?

cheers

Ask if they'll do a discount for cash!

Last August I paid £90 incl ECG with Dr Tabor, an AME based in Hove (contact details are on the CAA website). I don't know the current rate yet, but he has always been very reasonable compared with other AMEs.

Although it of course adds to the overall cost, for some years now I've happily driven the 45 miles or so to Hove, usually calling in at Shoreham airport on the way.

I like the idea of supporting an AME who charges a reasonable amount, also he is a very personable chap, and the medicals have been very educational and, frankly, rather enjoyable; all in all it makes for a very pleasant afternoon out.

Once it becomes an annual medical it is expensive for Class 2.

However if you don't mind a few restrictions similar to the NPPL but still wish to carry on with your lifetime PPL A, a medical renewal using the NPPL form of self declaration works well.
You sign the form to say you're healthy enough and your own GP countersigns that you haven't fibbed.
My GP in the Horsham/Sussex area charges me £20 a pop. Some do it for a donation to charity instead.
All quite legal & a fair example of our CAA easing the rules to our advantage.
