What wood is used for wooden props?

Excellent article by Chris Lodge on props in this month's mag -- made clear some things hitherto mysterious.
But his closing comments about giving up because he was no longer able to import the wood he wanted got me wondering: What wood is this? What do other UK prop makers (e.g. Newton) use?
