Mode S anomaly

Post by tim » Thu May 21, 2009 8:56 pm

One of the reasons bandied around by the authorities to justify Mode S is to make life harder for the terrorist (is it me or is that an excuse being used by the authorities for everything nowadays?)

Problem is the CAA publish the 'unique' identifier code for every G registered aircraft and Mode S transponders can be programmed to display this ID on a controllers screen by just a few button presses.

So now Mr Alan Kayeda can impersonate any aircraft he wishes, including those used by the Royal Family and Parliament.

Tim

You are quite right. There is also an 'off' setting on my mode S
