I am looking to buy an Escapade, which is a microlight, built under the auspices of the BMAA, To change the aircraft to a VLA ('A' licence type) which is what I want to do and is subject to a few mods! It would have to be transfered to the LAA.
Has any one done this exercise? ie,
transfer from BMAA to LAA, before you ask - LAA office can't answer the question until FD comes back from holiday (what would we do without him?) Neither can the BMAA lot answer the question - at all!

I'm not supprised that the BMAA don't know, as it is not thier standards it has to meet.
Ultimatly it will be FD's decision as to what, if any changes are required. I wonder what would happen to engineering without FD, not that I wish anything to happen you understand
I would start by comparing the 'Group A' version with the 'microlight' version, looking for any differences. Reality Aircraft ltd may be able to help you there. Those are the changes you possibly will need to make.
Reality website calls it a VLA, is this the same spec as was approved as Group A by the LAA?

If its a recent new built Escapade Microlight then it will be the same as the VLA as they share a common kit of parts. Earlier Microlight ones like mine are diffrent.
The Early escapade diffrences are mostly to do with Undercarriage. The U/C legs on the VLA are beefed up, the leg pivot bushes and bolts are up sized from 1/4 bolt, the axle tubes are bigger as are the Bungee suspention arms and V brace.
The other diffrence is the tailplane bracing wires are heavier duty on the VLA as well. All the new kits are manufactured so as thay can be built as both.
The later "VLA" U/C and tail bracing can be upgraded to the older kits, so as to comply.

Thanks Mark,
The aeroplane I am looking at was built in 04 and Terry Francis has confirmed you comments regarding up-grading various parts.
Having built 3 kits in the past, I don't fancy another 'build from scratch' job, so have been looking for a 'flying' Escapade, either allready group 'A' or to convert to group 'A' - I have decided I'm a 'bimbler' not a 'tourer' so the Sportcruiser has to go.
My main concern is, would the LAA take over a BMAA administered aeroplane?

I don't see why not as they are happy to take over aircraft from foreign systems even the USA experimental one.
