[size=18]Saw the below from Keith Negal on the BMAA forum regarding EASA & microlight a/c.
From the wording and list of participants I cannot see if the LAA were either there or even invited, yet his work covers precisely the sort of LAA a/c I fly & represents a significant section of the LAA 'fleet'.
So is the LAA in on this, I'd like to know more.[/size]

Dear Council

Yesterday in my capacity as President of the European Microlight Federation
I attended the first meeting of an informal group created by EASA, the
purpose of which is outlined in the e-mail below. Dominique Méreuze of the
FFPLUM and Jan Fridrich of the Czech LAA were also there, together with
representatives of a number of European manufacturers and National Aviation
authorities including the CAA. Although the main tasks are listed below it
was quite clear that members the group each had very different ideas about
the purpose of meeting and the situation was made no clearer by the draft
terms of reference Yves Morier proposed at the start of a meeting. One item
on the list was, in effect, the collection of data and making of
recommendations that might lead to some microlights coming out of Annex II.

It was interesting to find that almost everyone in the group made it quite
clear that they believe that this last point was an inappropriate task.
Instead it was agreed that the key tasks were (1) to look at the
inconsistencies between the US LSA and the bottom end of the European ELA1
and (2) to look at current microlight regulations in Europe and elsewhere
with a view to seeing what could usefully be applied to small light
aeroplanes. The offending item about removing microlights from Annex II was
removed from the ToR which was very much to our advantage. Jan, Dominique
and I were all very much in agreement and the manufacturers also supported
our position so I believe we can be satisfied with the result.

Nevertheless, we must view the study of microlight regulations with a
certain amount of caution if not suspicion. Constraints with regard to
independence will probably make it impossible for the EMF to bid for the
study but it was written into the terms of reference that the contractor
must work with us. This should enable us to ensure that issues that might
worry us are trapped before they become impossible to change.

This topic is on the agenda for the General Conference of the EMF to be held
in Bremen later this month

Dear Mr Negal,

Following a meeting between the Czech CAA, Czech LSA experts and EASA
representatives and a follow-up

meeting with Jan Fridrich on the 12th of August here in Cologne (see
attached note) it was agreed to set up an

informal group in order o discuss possible future concepts for the LSA
category and to prepare the task BR.010.

This task is planned to start in 2010 and is aiming on an adaptation of the
Basic Regulation for airworthiness of

small aircraft used in General Aviation. It will be supported by a study to
be launched already this year.

The main tasks for this informal group will be to prepare the task BR.010
and in particular:

- developing of the Terms of Reference (TOR)

- preparation for the Pre-RIA (Regulatory Impact Assessment)

- discussing the different options

- preparation of a high level meeting

- monitoring of a study

Following our discussion on Friday we would like to invite you to
participate in the first meeting of this informal group.

We invited also the following experts:

No expert but my guess is LAA would be represented by Europe Air Sports at that level.
