Nothing to stop you, but it won't give a very good indication of wind speed. Actually, unless it's free to rotate properly, it won't even give a very great indication of direction either.

I'm a Wing Commander in the RAF - yes, you can buy and fly an RAF Ensign if you would like, just the same as you can a Naval White Ensign (I've seen many on my travels around the UK). However, if you have no connection to the RAF then why not fly the British Civil Air Ensign?

When it comes to windspeed a flag is pretty poor for indication, however, not so bad for showing direction.

If you do decide to fly an RAF Ensign then I ask you to show it the respect that it deserves - fly it properly (not as bunting), never let it touch the floor and replace it if it gets "tatty". There is a section on the RAF website http://www.raf.mod.uk/history_old/hrafensign.html

Here is a link to a shop selling a variety of ensigns including RAF and Civil Air Ensigns http://www.flagsglobal.co.uk/ensigns.html

All the very best

That is one of the most interesting posts I have read in a while. I am going to go out and buy one. Thanks Gazzer.

Hi GAZ,

I support the RAF 100% i have just purchased a flag of them! i believe a percentage of the money i paid goes to the RAF......which i think is brilliant..the guys from the Air cadets collect regular for the RAF selling aircraft models ETC,ETC,....the flag i have is 5ftx3ft which will be flown now.... at about 6 meters from my intended spot now i have confirmation that there would be no problems in flying the R.A.F...ensign!

Regards GAZA..

Gaza

On behalf of the RAF and the Air Trg Corps, thank you for your support. I guess there aren't too many RAF Ensigns flying on the Western Isles (I'm guessing on Lewis as Harris is a bit too "lumpy"!?).

How fantastic would it be if the LAA were able to use the UK Air Ensign with the LAA logo in the lower right hand quadrant? Members could buy a sticker to use on their aircraft etc. :o

I got mine from Terry at Reality/escapade aircraft but I see that they are available on ebay - search "civil air ensign".
