EM Strut 7th June - ‘Jet engines from 1751 to 1945’

Thought it was worth mentioning that, for anyone interested in aviation history, we have an interesting talk arranged for the next Strut Meeting:

The speaker for Monday June 7th will be Max Alderson. The subject of his talk is ‘Jet engines from 1751 to 1945’ He is of course one of the guides at the RR Heritage Trust. He was at Barnoldswick even before R.R. He was active at Rover, and his knowledge of jet engines is encyclopaedic.

Strut meetings are held each month at:

The Plough
Main Street,
Normanton on Soar,
Loughborough.
Telephone: 01509 842228

regards,

Colin

Could you ask him for me about the Rover gas turbine fire pump as supplied to the MOD (Navy). I'm interested about the gearbox type that reduced the turbine revs from 45,000 to the pump impeller revs of about 3000. I think it was the same engine that was installed in the Rover 90(?) car for a bit of R+D. Its a pity I'm so far away, otherwise I would be there. This turbine was run up with two starting handles - one man to either side of the unit (portable). Used on the upper decks only !!
