LAA Sywell Rally

Post by Brian Hope » Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:31 pm

Only two weeks to go now. Don't forget to take your membership cards, membership admission is only £5 by road and that allows you to go airside. LAA, BMAA and BRA members only.
Forget your card and it'll cost you £10 plus £10 per day to go airside. Non members can join on the day and get member admission benefits straight away.
If you're flying in then book your slot on the Sywell website. One £10 landing fee covers all on board for the weekend, including airside access of course. See you there!

I assume that the lower entrance fee will be extended to RSA and other overseas organisations such as RAAC, OUV, EAA Sweden etc?

It is unlikely that anybody from those organisations will come by road. Hopefully if they do they will make themselves known at the LAA stand and get member benefits of airside access. Unfortunately we do not take the money at the gate, that is down to Sywell personel and the system has to be straightforward for them. Those that fly in will simply pay the one off landing fee.

The big decider on how busy it is will be the weather. Take a look at the forecast later in the week if you can. Last year most came on the Saturday as the cross-wind was worse on the Sunday.

Is it me or is the level of anticipation for the rally much more muted than it used to be?

The arrival slot bookings suggest that there are plenty of pilots looking forward to attending the Rally, and campsite bookings have also been strong. Dont forget it's a three dayer this year - Friday, Saturday and Sunday. and we have live music in Hangar 1 on Friday and Saturday nights, plus plenty to eat and drink. The larger exhibition fills three marquees and an outside area this year, plus we see the return of the Fabric workshop and the Fleamarket. There are more than enough reasons for attending the Rally, not least to meet up with old friends and talk aeroplanes. Hope to see you there.

Hi Ian, we're all praying for good weather, I daren't look at the long range! Latest news is that Steve Noujaim plans to put in an appearance. He leaves for Cape Town tomorrow and all being well will land back at Southend on Friday, having broken Alex Henshaw's record and also bettered Chalkie Stobbart's times (Chalkie did it SA-GB-SA so technically does not hold th GB-SA-GB record). Rumour has it we could see him at the rally on Saturday.
I'm sure we all wish him all the very best for his epic flight.

Far from being muted as someone suggested, take a look at the booking site, there are already way over 600 aircraft booked to come and that doesnt count those who intend to arrive on Thursday, of which I know of several from far afield. Looks like its going to be an excellent event this year.
I'll be there all 3 days and maybe Thursday too!

Hi Nigel, I will be there as well! The electrics has not gone to plan as around 2000m of the cable we use to use was stolen out of the containers at Turweston! I have had to get supplies in so we can power up the exhibtion tent. Come early Thursday and give us a hand making up the new cables!

I have booked a slot for the Jodel on Friday & Saturday and I am looking forward to flying NG to the Rally! Long term weather forecast looks good at the moment. Could not get any worse then the last couple of weeks! See you all later in the week
