Avionics engineer wanted

Post by l8lover » Tue Nov 09, 2010 7:54 pm

Does anybody know of a reliable and CHEAP avionics man, doesn't have to be approved. My King KT79 transponder has just gone belly up.

Thanks
Pete

I'm going to be called a pedant, I'm sure, but can you just clarify what you mean by an 'avionics man'?
Are we talking about installation, wiring and other fitting type functions, or repair of the innards of the boxes (transponders, radios, intercoms etc) themselves?

If it's boxes then I'd recommend Avionicare in Southend. OK they aren't mega cheap, but they are sensible and reasonable, and do appear to have an understanding of the permit aircraft world. I had a King KY97 radio repaired that had physical damage (don't ask) in that the channel selector was bent and the panel a bit bashed in. They fixed it and shipped it back for less than the magical 100 quid. They managed to repair it without requiring new parts. My guess is that they used a couple of second hand bits - I didn't ask that closely - because price was a sensitive issue and it was for a permit aircraft and therefore being fit-for-purpose carries more weight, I presume.
Oh yes, their service is quick and reliable, and you can get to talk to a person about your issue with the kit on the phone, if necessary.

I also had a radio they couldn't repair, but they were quite good about that as well, minimising the basic charge for looking at it to a sensible level and giving useful advice about the 'corpse'. The advice was I ought to have it back as some of the bits that go wrong most often with the kit (the display panel) were salvagable in this one.
