Does anyone know what the setup with N reg is these days? I heard they were tighteneing the rules but I can't remember the final outcome.

There was a consultation on this by the CAA; outcome was 'no change'

That was for CofA machines.

As far as I know you can not fly/keep a permit aeroplane on the N in the UK.

For permit aeroplanes (= experimental, amateur built, in US terms) you may only fly in the UK with the permission of the CAA and for 28 days a year. You must submit the relevant documents to the CAA (airworthiness certificate, last annual, insurance I think) and the CAA send back an authorisation. The 28 days don't have to be concurrent, but the time limit is stated on the authorisation. At the moment there is no charge, but there is talk of that changing.
