Wheel/tyre sizes. Confusion!

OK, so it seems that a 6-inch between-rims-edges wheel with a 6-inch diameter rim is a 6.00x6 wheel. Now, how do I know what sort of tyre goes on it? there seem to be lots of variations in tyre size such as....4.10/3.50x6......13400x6.....15600x6.....etc.

Sooooo, how do you know what the shape/diameter/thickness your tyres will be? Is there a conversion into English from techno-gobbledigook?

I may have some 6.00x6 wheels coming and I'm after some lightweight, narrow tyres with a large rolling radius.

Naw, that is for car tyres. Aero tyres use a different sizing format that may have gone out of fashion. Morris Minor tyres are 5.20x14 in ye olde format or 145/14 in the new one.

'Ye olde format' (5.20x14) remains current for crossply tyres. The newer format is for radials.

Watts Aviation (the tyre people) have an explanation of tyre sizes here. I found that useful when chosing some oversize tyres recently but as a final check before buying, phone them up - they are really helpful.

Rob, Given that you're in Cardiff it might be worth your while taking a wheel over to Watts at Lydney and seeing the selection of tyres first hand. I had all manner of issues with tyres for the Goodyear wheels on my Aeronca. My nearest stockist is LAS at Okehampton, I took a wheel to them and we sifted through a pile of possibly suitables until finding something that fitted.

Thanks, guys. I'll have a chat with Watts and see if they have an easy method of working out the OD of various tyre sizes. It is the method rather than the actual purchase of tyres that I'm really looking for.
