Registration for the photo library

Post by Tom Sheppard » Tue Mar 22, 2011 5:18 pm

Has failed several times and wasted twenty minutes due to being unnecessarily complicated.
So I won't bother. I already have a password to get in here and then I need two more to get into a library that does not exist yet.
What a waste of precious time. Hopeless.

Tom,

Oh it exists well enough !!! Why make access so difficult? Why restrict it to members? No idea, there are a number of excellent photo sites on the web with simple free access. Maybe the LAA just wants to be different.

It's so there is some encouragement to become a member.

I think the two accounts should be linked, but there may be technical reasons why not. ie dodgy types posting pictures we may find 'interesting'

Well I could not get in. After mush trying and wasted time Penny found the problem and I had access. It has now stopped working again and I will not bother this time. This is not a membership perk it is a curse.

I really don't see the point of being so protective. As I pointed out above there are a number of excellent picture sites on the web that require no membership.

Michael, I expressed no opinion as to whether I thought it was a good idea or not. It was the reason stated when the question was asked in the past.

It was the intention that the main data was reserved for members but that others would be allowed a taster so see the site so that enthusiasts who are interested in such things might join.
Regarding the linked passwords, I am not sure which bit you don't understand?
By linking the logon accounts and passwords I was referring to using the same accounts for both the forum and the photos.
The forum has had many successful, but unwelcome posts by fake members, and this is causing the mods a lot of additional work. The photo gallery allows logged on members to add photos. If the fake (dodgy) members were also able to add pictures that were unsuitable for a forum like this, eg pornography, or adverts, this would increase their workload.

I don't think I have ever had a password for the photo gallery, so have no idea if it still works. One has been applied for, yesterday, to see what I was missing :D

Yes, I suppose you can argue it either way. To my mind archives of this type are much better shared with any one who has an interest in them. The beauty of the internet is that it can make so much infomation available at no cost. If you wish to exploit the images commercially, fine you should pay a fee. However if viewing is for private purposes and research, there should be no fee or restriction.

Am puzzled by the fake (dodgy) members adding "unsuitable pictures".
I am a regular visitor to several over aviation photo archive sites and all I ever find there are airframes: wings, fuselages, undercarriages, colour schemes etc etc....!! Wonder why the LAA site would be a magnet for posters of "unsuitable pictures"? Have to pop in for a look now and again !!!!

What I simply don't get is why
I have to register for the library although I am already a paid up member. Surely my existing login ought to be enough to validate me without spamming me with repeated emails giving a new password that does not work. Either let me in or leave me alone!

Tom............

I can well understand your frustration!! Cold comfort for you, I know, I registered years ago and I have been able to access the photo library all along.

Sad to say the LAA website is a neglected facility. At one time it was well used and quite lively. Not these days, sadly........... Pity but is the way it is.....

I don't agree. If you want lively go to Pprune or the Flyer Forum. The LAA forum is for sensible posts on sensible subjects and as such IMHO that's how this forum should remain.

Just look at the free for alls that have taken place on the BMAA forum over the years and let's consider ourselves lucky that the LAA forum has remained a bastion of common sense and politeness!

On the matter of the photo library, I had problems at first but an email to Mr M soon had the issues sorted and I now have no problems logging on.

rogcal,

I do not visit the BMAA site but do visit PPrune regularly (and some other aviation sites). "let's consider ourselves lucky that the LAA forum has remained a bastion of common sense and politeness!" Yes, maybe so but it has acheived that status by remaining stagnant and moribund with a handful of visitors per week.

In my view nothing wrong with some controversy (whoops, spelling!!) now and again. Would just be good to see the site being used.

Ian, Looks as though persistence pays off !!!!

I run the site so am happy to help. It is hosted on a server in the US since it is cheap and gives us unlimited storage. To keep things simple we used the software used in the AB-Pics site produced by Irish Airpics and for that we needed an ISP that could accomodate that software. Thus for those reasons it is separate from the main LAA site and run by me on a voluntary basis.

The condition the Board made when setting it up was that it should be a member benefit and not entirely open to all - thus we had a pass word system built in. Unfortunately being on a separate ISP it is separate but you can use your username and password that you use for this site when you set it up and if you tick the box marked remember me it will and you will get instant access each time you open the site.

Send me a PM with your phone number and I will ring you to help.
