Last night I was privileged to attend one of the best safety talks it has been my good fortune to listen to. We invited Justyn Gorman to come along to Kent Strut and present his talk 'Preparing for the unexpected', a talk he has developed following a serious accident he and a lady passenger had in an Extra three years ago. Justyn is a highly proficient display pilot and Instructor and talked us through the events that ultimately lead to what could so easily have been a double fatality accident on that fateful day. He had displayed at Southend and was attempting to get back to Shoreham, made some what turned out to be wrong decisions, and wound up in IMC low over the North Downs.
Justyn has turned that negative experience into a highly thought provoking presentation, at times quite harrowing but certainly frank and with no pulled punches, "I screwed up" he said, "and what happened that day has had a profound effect on my and my passenger's life."
If you ever get the opportunity to hear Justyn's talk I highly recommend it. Justyn is an LAA member and his route to the Extra has been Rans S6, RV4 (still has a half share in that aircraft, and Pitts). The Extra was replaced and he continues to instruct at Shorham and fly the Extra at air shows and displays.
I wont include Justyn's details here because I do not know how he is fixed for giving this talk elsewhere, but if you do see it advertised at a Strut or Club night make a point of going along to hear him talk, it might just save you from making an all too final error of judgement.
