I recently lost my Garmin 196 software after attempting to carry out a software upgrade. The unit was as dead as a parrot so I phoned Garmin in Southampton and was invited to send them the 196 for a check-up. To cut a long story short, they were unable to force the software to load, identifying a fundamental error in the unit but gave me an exchange unit with updated software and nav database under warranty. This was done with helpful and courteous exchanges over the phone, updates on progress by email and altogether a prompt and efficient service. They even checked that my Garmin - USB lead was OK for future uploads / downloads with MapSource.
