LAA Website

Post by Paul Leigh » Wed Dec 18, 2013 11:38 am

I've not had much of a reason to log on for a while but was dissapointed to see the LAA have took a giant step backwards with an awful, awful website. Whoever decided that was a good idea should be slapped with a wet fish - do you actually have any comprehension of how the web works? Geez...

Actually I like the website, its easy to navigate and there's lots of information to digest. Perhaps websites are like works of art - some you like and some you don't. I hate fancy websites that take ages to load but I know others think they are wonderful.

Incidently, I have nothing to do with the LAA website.

Maybe I'll volunteer my time and expertise when the LAA volunteers my annual fee. Been there and done that in another association.

The forum layout seems to work for me ok , Can`t really compare it to the last one as they upgraded soon after i joined :?

Would like to see more traffic pass through thou from my point of view , but as already been said, there are dedicated site`s for each specific plane that members are building/own so any queries will be best answered on those site`s  !!

so what is it about the `new` forum thats not agreeing with you ??

The comment was about the LAA Website Paul, the http://www.lightaircraftassociation.co.uk site

This is a boiler plate forum and I have no particular issues with it, it does whats it's supposed to but the www is the front window to the World for the association and it looks and works like an amateur built it.

I know it has ben built by the same outfit that did the BMAA site, no doubt to a cheap as chips price but the important thing is, that it looks cheap as chips too.

Peace and love Paul, it is that time of the year after all. Peace and love for your incisive assessment of the LAA website. I genuinely hope you feel better for it.
Here's one from me - I don't like curry. Can't say coming out of the closet on that one has done it for me, no Tom Daley moment of huge relief, no release from the guilt that I don't add to the coffers of the 'Maharani Tandoori' just up the road but hey, it's out there now and it might help others.
Just to let you know - I'm ready for the wet fish facial - I like the website and I had, and still do have, something to do with the way it looks and some of the content. Is it perfect - no, is it trendsetting - clearly not and yes it was a crib from the BMAA, but it does do what I expect most members want it to do - it provides access to a huge resource of material. It also does a half decent job of telling the world what LAA does and what it can offer the aviation enthusiast. Best of all it didn't cost a bomb and is in-house updateable so neither does it cost a fortune to upkeep. I don't doubt we could spend £10K, £20K or more on going with the current flavour of the month, only to be told in twelve months’ time that it was out of date and needed refishing, sorry refreshing. Personally I think the LAA has better things to spend members' money on and more important issues to deal with.
ps. Do you want to tell the BMAA their website is carp too or shall I? :D :D :D

Thanks Brian, before I dip my hand in the fish bucket...

Put this into context, you think the website looks and functions ok, does its job and was nice n cheap, easy to maintain for you and all that - great. Lets say, I venture into your territory and bring along to a mutually agreeable airfield, a cobbled together aeroplane looking carbunkle thats been assembled from old bits of pallet wood, a shopping trolley, some part working controls, an engine from a long retired chainsaw and a propellor made of cheese. Sure it has a few oil leaks, some bits don't quite fit and it might not be a perfect reflection of the sporty LSA types in new showrooms nowadays but hey, it was cheap, I can maintain it with a hammer, a few nails and some duct tape and it's my baby, I love it and it kind of flys too.

Do you think it should be the poster child for the LAA?

The BMAA will be in no doubt about my opinions of their website, I was much less diplomatic with them when I addressed that issue some years back.

How can someone be so disrespectful of my aeroplane. I think your wonderful Brian.
This website is perfectly OK and does the job. Could be a little more input from members but don’t let it get like the Flyer forum “takes all night to catch up with all the
girly talk”

Paul
Life is subjective....thank goodness. I can choose colours I like, you can choose what you like.
In a closer context. You can fly what you like. I can fly what I like.
If you dislike the LAA Website that much then why don't you suggest changes you believe your expertise can lead it to.
Subjectivity filters through everything. In fact I feel a strong dislike to your attitude which in truth is just plain negative with no good reasoning behind it. That's my right. You probably don't see it that way and that's your right.

In the Paul Leigh's "worst forum ever" context which emanates from BMAA Forum antics this time last year. Where does the LAA Forum stand in this years Paul Leigh rankings?

Thank you
Gerry

Sorry, but this thread is just rubbish , and a downright insult to the folk who work tirelessly to retain our hobby as the pleasurable activity that it is .

The original poster appears to have a lot more specialist knowledge in IT and website design than he has in aeronautical matters , and is clearly not averse to playing 'agent provocateur' in laying into other organisations websites as well.

I believe that LAA's website is factual and informative , and much appreciated amongst people who have toyed with the idea of breaking away from the flying club mentality and joining a 'proper' aviation fraternity.
Or perhaps they would have done, but didn't like the website ? ? ! ! ? Get out of here .

I think the website is great. As a member I think it looks good, is simple to use and a wealth of information that I have benefitted from greatly over the years. I think a prospective new member would also find it attractive and informative. One of my pet hates is arty-f@rty ponsey websites that look like pizza topping where you cannot find anything and/ or are slow. Ours is clean, simple and good. My thanks and congratulation to all who have brought it to fruition.

Ps. Another plus for me - when I have my morning sit on the throne I balance my i-phone on a convenient shelf in front of me with the LAA home page up and watch the pictures of the aircraft go scrolling past. What could be a better start to the day...........?!!

Only a computer geek would thrash someone elses website. The LAA one is brilliant - don't change a thing It does the job, full stop.

It works for me quite well. I don't need fancy flashing lights and geeky gizmos either. It is a million miles from the last one

If a new flashy one puts even 20p on my membership or reduces the service by the LAA, then I don't want a new one

Paul's entitled to his opinion but such a combative post! Is there a hidden agenda here?

As an EAA member, I view both websites, ours is fine, it serves its members, is full of information & does the job required. It will never outperform the EAA one but we do not the EAA resources.

Merry Christmas everyone, including Paul.
