Any good avionics installers / dealers for permit aircraft?

Post by gbandera » Thu Sep 25, 2014 8:54 am

Hi, I'm in the final stages of buying my first aircraft (an Alpi Pioneer 300) and as it has a older radio without 8.33khz along with a mode-C transponder one of the first things I'm looking to do is an avionics upgrade.

I have two main options / routes in mind;

1) Replace the radio and possibly the transponder with something that could integrate with a glass cockpit system (like the Garmin G3X for example) later. I like the idea of retaining a 'discrete' radio, just as you retain a couple of the key analogue flight instruments so this approach has some attraction.

2) Plan a 'big bang' upgrade in a few months and go entirely new panel with glass.

I've contacted a few avionics installers / dealers, but those that have responded have effectively said they only get involved with certified aircraft. I wonder if anyone knows of somewhere (preferably based in the south of England) that has a good reputation and is happy to work on permit aircraft such as the Pioneer?

Obviously is they are dealers / suppliers of multiple vendors that would be good as an agnostic view of what the likes of Garmin, Dynon, MGL, Aspen, etc. can offer would be a big bonus. I'd also appreciate input as to coolision avoidance / ADS-B Out etc.

Essentially I'm looking for a company that won't shake their head at permit aircraft, have good experience / reputation and that could help steer my thoughts / approach...

Any suggestions??

Hi Anthony

although he is only a supplier, John Dellafield at LXavionics may be able to recommend someone. He has always given me good service and a good price, and has been unstinting with free advice. He's based in Oxford.

If you're based in the West Country you could try RGV Aviation at Gloucestershire Airport. They have a strong avionics department.

Best wishes with your Pioneer,
