Good morning all,

I need some advice please, I have recently changed to the LAPL from a full UK PPL with a class two medical which expires shortly. What is the minimum medical requirement(I am trying to keep costs under control) that I can use, I only fly in the UK and only fly permit aircraft.

Hi,

I could be wrong here, but if your "full UK PPL" was an old UK PPL(A) and you really only ever need to fly Permit aircraft in the UK, i.e. Annexe 2, then you didn't need to switch to a LAPL. The UK PPL(A) continues to be valid for UK registered Annexe 2 aircraft flown within the UK.

However, if you now have a LAPL(A) then just go for the LAPL Medical, and unless your GP is really relaxed, friendly and has time to spare and an enquiring mind, it is probabaly easier and cheaper to get the Medical done by the AME who used to do your Class 2 (the LAPL Medical can be issued by either your GP or an AME).

Malcolm If you look at your class 2 medical you should see it is still valid for a further 12 months as a LPPL medical. Clive

Malcolm I should have said this applies to us older pilots where the class 2 is for 12 months but also covers LAPL for 24 months if this is the case the LAPL expiry date is also on the medical certificate.

I was in a similar situation earlier this year; medical expired, cert of experience expired (Permit expired for that matter!). Had to sort the lot out. First the medical (being over 60), expired class 2 . Doc suggested LAPL medical as it was 2 years and NO ECG. £100 instead of £240.......

Next, I could continue to fly on NPPL priv's (on my brown cardboard PPL A) until I got a LAPL. Sufficient to do a new skills test so my examiner signed me off for a LAPL and I'm left to apply on-line for the LAPL. (I phoned FCL and they assured me that all was in place for the issue of a LAPL). I need to do this within the 2 years of my Cert of Experience but in the meantime I can fly my permit a/c within NPPL priv's (which suits me fine at the moment. A LAPL will let me go to Europe if I want to).

Not a bad price if he actually does something for it??? Mine charged me £120 just to sign the form for a self declaration after taking 5 years to think about . But it means I am allowed to fly again.
