Gyrocopter solo bond

Post by paulbh » Fri Jul 18, 2008 2:53 am

I am learning to fly a gyrocopter and before going solo I am required to sign a wavier quote "Note that a bond of £5000 is required to be paid before flying solo in our machines. This is used toward repairs in the event of damage to the Gyrocopter. You must sign a "bend it, mend it" agreement with us which states that you will be liable for any uninsured damage to the machine whilst in your care." unquote. I don't want is a general discussion is this fair to ask etc but what I would like to know can someone point in the direction of broker who would underwrite the £5000 for a modest fee? The more modest the better!

Thanks Paul

Where are you learning to fly the gyro so I can go somewhere else?

Is the 5k the operators damage excess deductible ?
If so perhaps their insurers would quote a premium.

I guess that the figure is so high due to the smallish numbers of gyro's and perhaps their perceived claim rate.

I have heard of GA clubs who similarly claim deductibles from hirers in the case of accidents and even one that needs cheque/card before hiring. Though usually at more like 500.
