LAA Welcomes New CAA “Dronecode” Drone Safety Initiative

Post by SteveSlater » Thu Nov 24, 2016 5:27 pm

The LAA welcomes and fully supports the launch of the new DroneSafe.uk website launched today by the CAA in partnership with air traffic control body NATS. It directs users to ‘Dronecode’, which gives advice to the millions of new users who may get a drone this Christmas, to fly safely and responsibly.

The Dronecode is a simple set of rules and guidelines, established in legislation, which outline how to fly drones safely and within the law in the UK. It is backed by leading aviation players, drone retailers and manufacturers, and the Department for Transport.

Said LAA Chief Executive Stephen Slater: “With ever more people buying and flying drones, there has become a clear and worrying risk of conflict with all types of aircraft. Light aircraft, such as those flown by LAA members, tend to fly at lower levels and their smaller size makes them more likely to be seriously damaged by a collision with a drone being flown either close to an airfield or too high, so we fully welcome this initiative which points out the risks of their misuse.”

Whilst it is definitely a good thing to see that the CAA are onto this , I do rather wonder if their wise words are either :
A. Going to fall on completely deaf ears.
B. Preaching to the converted.
Legitimate, law abiding users of these things , who are probably more than willing to embrace the relevant regulations, are probably not really the sort of people who are going to receive them as Christmas presents and subsequently present very little risk to the public at large.

The medium risk users of these things are the kids who receive them as presents, stick the batteries in, then take them into the garden , only to have them fly off into the path of a passing motorcyclist.

The high risk users are the chav's who don't care either way. These things are as much fun as laser pens to them and they don't just inconvenience the pilot , they can bring the whole 'plane down if they get really lucky.
Unfortunately, "Dronecode", means about as much to them as the words of the 'Drink Responsibly Campaign' do to the scantily clad , paralytic youngsters laying in a freezing pool of vomit in city centres at chucking out [chucking up ] time.
I am not criticising the legislation part of this , which the CAA have quite rightly addressed. The implementation part of this will probably be down to the police...........
And by the time they front up , the 'Drone Chav's' will be long gone !
