I am sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along shortly but I as Iunderstand it the short answer to your question is - you can't! If you want to go to France (unless you have a microlight) you need a class 2 or a LAPL medical.

Hi John, I'm certainly not more knowledgeable but I think the official wording is an ICAO compliant medical - which the Self-Declaration and the Medical Declaration before it, are not. The LAPL Medical is probably your best bet if you can't manage a Class 2.

I would agree that a LAPL medical seems to be the only way.
However probably being a bit pedantic here a LAPL licence and also a LAPL medical as far as I understand are not ICAO and therefore not valid internationally. i.e ok for Europe but nowhere else in the world.

That excellent magazine of our had a very good article on the Self Declaration medical not long ago and, whilst some of it might now be out of date, I think the OP is looking at note 3 which says "Permission required from appropriate authority if outside of UK".
As far as I know only Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and Ireland have given this permission. Have I missed any and has anyone ever managed to get any other authority to give permission? It does seem odd that you can fly a microlight in France on a Medical Declaration but not what I still call a Group A aeroplane.
