Am I too fat

Post by 4535jacks » Wed Mar 29, 2017 7:34 pm

I have just sold my Jodel Mascaret to release some funds for a house purchase and already I cannot bear the thought of a future that does not involve me owned my own aircraft!

My budget is tiny but I am still drawn to owning a single seat vw engined steed and particularly the Taylor monoplane which is on my 'I own before I die' list. So I may try and find a cheap monoplane project or hangar queen that needs restoring but am I too heavy to fly the thing?!

I have a read a few comments online that it doesn't have a great useable load and is sensitive to CofG. What are is the usable load for most homebuilt monos on the UK register?

For reference, if I don't have a big breakfast, I weigh 85kg. I am only 5'10 so height should be an issue.

Gary
Your weight and dimensions will be fine in a Monoplane!

Brilliant, thanks Gerry.

I will start my search for a suitable airframe, hopefully there is a tired example in need of some TLC somewhere.

The sums appear to stack up but watch those chocolate digestives Gary.
Max authorised is generally 700 lbs, a few are 735 and some examples are quoted as being a fair bit below 700lbs. Typical empty weight is likely to be about 450lbs (the prototype was 410 but that was with a JAP engine, a 1600 VW conversion is heavier). About 40 lbs for fuel leaves 210 on a typically authorised 700lbs example. With flying clobber on you might well be 195 lbs. Be careful to check max authorised weight and empty weight when buying, you don't want a heavy one or one with under 700lbs max authorised.

When rebuilding a monoplane are there any mods that will raise the MTOW?
