Illegal use of a 25 kz Radio

Post by howell » Wed May 03, 2017 8:10 pm

So after this looming deadline its illegal to have a 25 kz radio on board your aircraft that works.
This in effect will de value my aircraft by £2,000 pounds as I have a perfectly good Bendix King which now will be consigned to the dustbin.
I continue to be surprised that we all go like good citizens and are forced to spend money for no logical reason.
These actions do not inspire me to continue flying in which is already a costly hobby.
Thanks CAA you have shafted us again good work.
Chris Howell.

I have read somewhere else that the deadline may be extended for some "years"?
If this is true then it is even worse,
"Dump your perfectly good 25khz spend lots on a new 8.33 thing plus installation etc", then "Sorry, you needn't have done that, you can still use the old one".
And we continue to allow ourselves to be battered like this, because if we dare complain we are bad guys.

Not factually correct..
Existing 25kHz radios can be left installed provided that they are only used for exempted frequencies, such as the emergency frequency.
But I understand your frustrations

Do what I did, sell your old radio in the states on eBay or other forum. I got 400 dollars for mine which offset the cost of a new one.

I do agree though that this was over regulation!

However you look at it we are being scammed out of our hard earned cash, its a total waste of money and a criminal waste of world resources.

Just go none radio, if we all do it will cause mayhem to air traffic then remove this ridiculous ruling. I would not mind but there is not enough competition to bring the price down for these radios, the only clear winners are the suppliers. The current pricing is based on small number sales, but they are holding the same pricing for large number sales its a win win for them. If they slashed the cost due to the amount they are going to sell then it would ease the pain.

It is sad to see all these
suppliers making headline advertising stating the looming deadline to be ripped off with a new 8.33 radio. All the aviation magazines are running these alarming adverts.

I sold my aged Narco for the cost of an Icom A6E and spent an hour wiring it in. Much better audio and although adding memories takes a while to master it is a delight to use. £250 is not a huge outlay folks so go the civil disobedience route if you want but I don't think you'll get a great following.

The 8.33 legislation is going to be a far bigger nail in the coffin of an already struggling GA then anybody realises.
How can it be good for the fine hobby of amateur aviation to be saddled with this 8.33 farce it serves no purpose whatsoever and is no benefit to general aviation, it is only a drain on already limited sized pockets.
I really wish we would all wake up and say NO to the biggest scam since mode S.
