Best Low Wing Taildragger kit?

Post by WBerry » Sat Jul 28, 2018 1:41 pm

Like the title says.
Ideally fast build. Obviously you have Vans (RV-14) and Zenair (CH635).

But is that it?

Opinions appreciated :)

Will.

William

If you want advice you need to give more information about you and your mission than you have.

In taildraggers Van’s do the 4,7,8 ,9 and 14. Nose pushers all but the 4 plus of course the 12. I can’t find a 635 in the Zenair lineup....a 650.

I have flown all the RVs apart from an 8, and a Zenair 601, the RVs as a step up in performance and ability from the Zenair.

The rally is not too far away, why not attend and have a look and speak to owners and builders of the types, maybe get a flight in each.

Good idea.
I'm curious about the view over the nose in modern kits. It seems like they're optimised to be trikes so they don't bother with a sloping down cowling.

Hi Will

The view over the nose is not a problem in any of these taildraggers.

I have an RV4 with Oregon Aero seats optimised for someone my height 5’08, when a taller group member flies he puts in less padded seats. The seven is the same, in fact all of them are.

Best quote of the day from Oshkosh from someone following an RV into the pattern

“Xxxx! How can they be so fast, and then so slow on finals”. Sums them up. I was initially hammering around at 180 plus on the first test flight of my 4 to break the engine in, then when you come back to the circuit it’s amazing how rock solid the are at slow speed, my brain did not want to accept I could get below 60 after crossing the fence.
