Flying UK LAA Aircraft on Australian (CASA) PPL

Post by Gerry Holland » Wed Mar 13, 2019 11:49 am

Have an Australian Pilot friend over in June/July and wondered if anyone could throw any light on whether he could fly my LAA Single Seat. He has Glider and Aircraft CASA PPL's and many years of single engine experience in Queensland Outback. Any ideas where to contact for correct advice in UK?

This might be a place to start:

It looks to me a bit like the UK system where your friend would have to authorise CASA to let the CAA have access to his details. I expect it will take some time (especially with CASA AND the CAA involved), so he probably needs to make a start as soon as possible.

Hi Gerry,

If your friend is flying a non-EASA aeroplane registered in the UK such as those with a LAA Permit to Fly, then his ICAO licence is rendered valid under the UK Air Navigation Order, Article 150.

A declaration and/or validation are only required where the holder of an ICAO licence wishes to fly an EASA aircraft in an EASA member state and is therefore subject to EASA Basic Regulation.
