So when you buy an aircraft (used) what actually changes hands (apart from the aircraft :) ). I mean how is the ownership actually transferred?

One notifies the CAA, which reissues the paperwork to the new owner. Money changes hands. That's to say, money is given to the CAA who use about 2% on the paperwork and justify the rest in telling one how long it took to process the paperwork. Something like that.

It's actually one of the easiest processes in aviation... :?

Make sure you are given ALL the log books, engine, airframe, prop if it's a wobbly one, dating back to the aircraft's date of birth if available or as far as possible.
CAA will want proof, a photo copy, of your insurance for it before they will register it in your name.
Radio licence (if it has a radio) will be required, £20 annually I believe.
This is not your FRTO licence but an "installation" licence.
Definately, repeat, definately get in touch with your local LAA inspector & take him with you to look over the a/c before you buy. He will also keep you right on paperwork etc.

Thanks for the advice. I was also wondering how the ownership was actually transferred. Will the CAA take my word for it when I try and register is? Does the old owner need to write them with my details?

A bit like a buying a car.

He fills out section 1 on the back of his certificate of registration naming you as the new owner. He can then send that direct to CAA or give it to you to send when you re-register. You get a form CA1 from CAA and send it to them (with some dosh of course as it's CAA).
