Rans S19 – RV12 and Pioneer Hawk

Post by rtl_flyer » Wed Oct 08, 2008 3:05 pm

Friend of mine is thinking of building, his choice/ideas so far are :

Rans S19 – RV12 and Pioneer Hawk

He is based in Manchester, is there anybody who is building the above models in the area. So he could come and have a look and chat.

** Realise RV12 is not LAA approved yet.

Anybody care to comment on merit of these or suggest others?

Tim

That is a fascinating choice of aircraft. Relatively slow metal f/g v wooden high speed retractable! The hawk is very good but I have no direct experience of the others.

If he wants a look at an MCR01 I am about an hour down the M6.

Rans S-19 isn't approved yet either...
If he's thinking about an S-19/RV-12, then what about a Eurostar; and if he's thinking about a Pioneer, then what about a Tecnam Sierra (retractable version now approved)? Someone is bound to say "Sportcruiser" too...

Not a lot of logic in the choices. Two aircraft that you presently cannot build here and are something of an unknown entity and a quicker wooden airframe.......

Eurostar, Zodiac 601xl, Sportcruiser are much more develped designs with most of the bugs shaken out and largely similar performance - much the same as the S19 & RV12 will have. Want to go quicker then CT, Remos, MCR01 are obvious choices.

Have to build in wood? then he is probably right on the money with the Pioneer

Hmm, not heard of the Remos before. £65000, it just seems so expensive, why do these machines cost so much? 8)

I was going to suggest the tecnam. Had a look at the Rans site and thought the S7S looked a fun machine - and LAA approved.

He has just started thinking about what he may like to build and so far is open minded but drawn towards something Rotax for running costs.

So is there anybody in the Manchester area that could show him what they are building and help him build up the picture of what he needs to think about, what is involved.

Dave Almey is just starting to build a Rans S19, he (well his company Skycraft) is the UK agent for Rans, I think he usually advertises in the magazine, so you should be able to find contact details there.
As for the Remos G3, yes very expensive, but its a complete factory built aircraft, not a homebuilt- although still expensive as is the CT. For a little less money you could get a much better performing aircraft like an RV6/7 complete and with a low time engine and for even less a Europa, which would be faster than the Remos and still have the low fuel burn of the Rotax. Or for less than 1/3 of the price of one of these new factory built aircraft, you could get a good second hand Jodel, Emeraude, Piper Vagabond, Luscombe etc

You are certainly correct Nigel- but the original query was about building. Building a Jodel, Vagabond or Emeraude is possible a Luscombe a trifel difficult.

But hopefully rtl_flyers mate will find a few people locally to talk to and work out whether he wants to build, build and fly or simply fly.

Best of luck.

Thread creep I know but can I understand the Remos will have a permit and yet is factory built. Am I mistaken or can anyone advise?

I was told it will have a EASA/CAA permit, not a LAA permit.
