LAA GRASS ROOTS FLY IN SUCCESS!

The LAA Fly In at Popham proved a significant success, with more than 3,000 visitors, more than 30 exhibitors and a total of 350 visiting aircraft through the weekend. Despite adverse weather forecasts the event stayed largely dry and a number of long-distance visitors were able to make the journey to Popham from France, Belgium, Germany and Sweden.

Another notable arrival was Keith Griggs who flew in from East Fortune in Scotland in his CP 301A Emeraude. His route took in airfields including Compton Abbas, Wickenby, Lee on Solent, East Winch and Rochester where he carried passengers in exchange for donations to Cancer Research UK. He is estimated to have generated over £1,500 for the charity and was recipient of the LAA Trophy for the Most Meritorious Arrival.

What was particularly notable about the Popham event was its sociality. Both LAA members and exhibitors alike commented on its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with post-event comments such as “It’s a great reunion as well as a fly-in–cum trade show” and “super friendly, the event always had a good vibe”.

In addition to aircraft ranging from 1920s Klemm and DH60 Moth vintage types, new arrivals included the first sight in Britain of the new Sling High Wing model, along with Eurofox and Aeroprakt Vixxen 600kg microlights. The Garmin Speakers Corner hosted a presentation of forthcoming new types such as the Skyfly Axe e-VTOL, Vans RV-15 and the Scalewings SW-51 Mustang replica.

Replica WW2 aircraft were at the forefront in the Fly-In Awards judging too, with the RAA Canada Trophy for best kit-built aircraft being awarded to Steve Markham for his Spitfire Mk 26 G-CIXM, which received its permit to fly on the opening day of the fly-in. Another Spitfire Mk 26, G-CJWW, owned and built by Martin Overall, was recipient of the Prince Michael of Kent Trophy for the best aircraft at the Fly-In. Best vintage and classic award went to the Piper L-18C Super Cub flown to the event by Willem Ronge from Antwerp in Belgium.

On Sunday morning, the LAA was also proud to play host to 17 year-old Mack Rutherford, fresh from his circumnavigation of the globe. Mack flew in with the Shark microlight in which he completed his 29,225nm (54,124km) flight, as a suitable finale to the three days of the LAA event.

Yes, it was fun, but it does NOT replace the Rally.
I appreciate that Covid played a big part in reducing what many of us look forward to every year. Since the "Old days" of Cranfield and Wroughton, many people's reason for belonging to the PFA/LAA was... The Magazine and the Rally.
I believe that that sentiment is still alive and kicking today, so I sincerely hope that we have a "proper" rally next year and perhaps keep the Popham "Fly in" as an addition!
