FELT STRIP

Post by bashleyhorn » Sun Aug 16, 2009 8:29 pm

Does anyone have a supplier for good quality 3/16" felt ? I need some to cover my tank bay ribs and supports. I need around 24 feet of 1" wide or 12 feet of 2" wide etc. Spruce have 1/4" but I have to buy a 36" sheet which is not that convenient.

Snooker hall? Must be a few old tables that get recovered?

How about "HobbyCraft" lots of material for making things. Shops in many locations. May have to put up with Barbie pink felt but you can live with that!

Try G & S Brough Ltd - good for all sorts of washers and gaskets, and will provide strips of felt I'm sure, good value too.

We've a spare roll of felt that might do, at the Bristol Aero Collection Museum at Kemble - it was to re-bed the glass in the horse-drawn tram, and I think was around 1.5" wide, brown coloured, but they used some black instead. I'll look for it on Monday when I'm there next, and can find out the supplier's details in case it's not quite right.

Otherwise, how about felt pipe-wrapping?
http://www.warren.co.uk seem to do that sort of thing.

Okay, this is a supplier in America, but seems to have what you need:

Many thanks for that, I am following a lead in the US at the moment but it's worth a look at. Ash

The roll of felt that's spare looks too thin for you - it's 3mm x 45mm in a 20-foot roll, and black.

The company who supplied it was British Felt Co, at 14 Drakes Mews, Crownhill, Milton Keynes, MK8 0ER, phone 01908 263304.

A check on Google shows they're still there, and seem to have a wide range of product at http://www.britishfelt.co.uk/industrial.htm

Hope that helps.

Woolies, as mentioned in the previous post would be my choice.

Failing that http://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk might be worth a go.

I know felt was the orginal/traditional material, but it does hold moisture. Would Expanded Neoprene strip be another option? It's a spongy stuff, but it is closed cell so doesn't absorb water. It's often used as a substitute for felt in car restorations. It should be available from the above sources.
