Moving aircraft project

Post by rhimmelein » Thu Aug 17, 2017 9:19 am

Hello,
has anybody experience with moving a larger restoration aircraft project from the airfield to the workshop? Aircraft needs disassembly for transportation as well. Looking for some people contacts or companies that can be recommended.

Thanks,
Ralf

I borrowed an open (not covered) glider trailer and used balks of timber as required under the fuselage of a Fairchild Argus and lashed the whole lot down with cargo straps - traveled over 400 miles with not a problem.

Not sure how large your aircraft is but some truck rental companies have tail lift equipped trucks for hire. 7.5 ton Cargo 1250 for example.
Helps getting the fuselage on-board.

Sorry folks for my late reply!
The aircraft in question is a Cessna 310. The fuselage is 29 feet and 6 inches long and the wings are 18 feet each. The problem with the wings are the nacelles/engine mounts which go very far forward and are as long as the 6 Cylinder Continental engine sticking out at the front. Either a fancy jig is required to transport the wings upright or a second trailer is necessary. I don't think a standard 7.5t lorry is long enough, but I agree the ones with the crane will definitely help to get the lady apart easier. There are also the other parts like tanks vertical and horizontal stabilizer, etc. So lots of parts and I am not sure everything will fit on a 7.5t lorry. Weight wise its not a problem. The whole aircraft is only 1.6t so not really weight problem.
Anyone have some other recommendations on how to disassemble/transport such a big bird?
If anyone knows of a workshop in the North Hampshire/Wiltshire area please let me know. I need some space to restore this bird.

Thanks,
Ralf
