Advice for malfunctioning radio

Post by bill king » Sun Jan 17, 2010 6:02 pm

My Bendix King radio picked up pilot transmissions to a radar station today but only intermittently picked up ground transmissions from the station despite being about 10 miles away at 2500 ft. This is not the first time that this has happened. Any ideas as to why?

Bill
My first port of call would be t look at the aerial connections, ensure that they are tight, that the outer braid is not near to the central conductor of the coax, also check for corrosion at the ground plane connection.

The other place to look is the edge connector in the back of the rack. My friends King seems to need it gently cleaned up at least once year. Usually it is only the transmit side of things that seems to go down.

King radio

Before I took it out I had a similar problem with my KX 195 ( a dual 175 ) and Connington.

My radio engineer said the 175/195 series uses two crystals, one transmits and one receives. As the crystal dies you find frequencies where you can transmit, but not receive, and vica versa.

How old is the set ?
