EASA STC for Sky-Tec starter on O-200?

Post by Stu B » Tue May 25, 2010 10:19 pm

The old, heavy, Delco "pull-cable" starter on my o-200 was past its prime and is no longer supported, so I got a Sky-Tec lightweight "push button" replacement. There is an FAA STC to cover these modifications, but I am having trouble identifying an EASA approval for the changes (or any pre-EASA European STC). I'm sure many of the O-200s now have the new starters so surely there is an STC already approved?

Alternatively - look at this.

http://www.bandc.biz/index.aspx

Airworld supply, STC/PMA version or homebuilt version, just fitted one.

Very good product.

Guess it's a bit late though..................

Don't forget - The Skytec is FAA/PMA approved and fitted as standard on new O-200's therefore the Form 1 you get with it will suffice. No STC or Mod required.

Mike, having spoken to both manufacturers and seen their products at SnF, B&C would be my choice too!

Thanks for these thoughts, guys. As regards Sky-Tec vs B&C, I was aware of the B&C option and might well have bought one, but when I rang the UK B&C agent (Airworld) I got a recorded message saying he was on holiday and please ring back next week, wheras Adams were open for business and had the Sky-Tec on the shelf! My aircraft (Bolkow Junior) is on a C of A (and on Germna register) so I suspect LAA mods would not help much. I'll speak to my CAMO about the "now original equipment/PMA" angle, perhaps that may cut some ice, but a slight complication is that I'm sure the current standard fit is a key or push-button start, my Delco was, of course, a pull-wire starter, so as well as just swapping the motor I had to swap the pull-wire for a push-button, and so also had to saw off the spigot inside the engine accessory drive case that the old spag clutch mounts on; sawing that off is part of the STC for the mod to fit either Sky-Tec or B&C, I guess the new engines no longer have a spigot!
