Hi Dave, I am very interested in SSDR and agree (!!! !!!) with Welshman that we should share experiences here.
So, I'll start. I've been gathering bits and pieces for a Pouchel Light, a Mignet style fllying flea concept. There are a fair few flying in France now. You can build from a basic kit with no engine and fabric (5000 Euro) or plans (100 Euro). See www.pouchel.com
I am building from plans and to date I have made all the alloy parts and have most of the AN hardware, wheels etc. Need to make foam ribs and .8mm ply rib reinforcements - my mate's made a jig to batch cut them, just need to scrape some money together to buy the ply. It will be powered by a Rotax 447, not my ideal choice but they are available relatively affordably secondhand.
This is how I intend being able to keep flying when I retire, as cheap as chips with minimal hassle, but I am in no rush to finish it, I just do a bit when I have the time and the inclination. In theory at least I still have five years to go to retirement.
What's anybody else building?

without wishing to divert from the original thread I was interested to read Brian's comment about a foam rib jig - is that something you could expand on Brian? A friend (who will posts here) has a similar need to make foam ribs and we have been discussing how best to shape them.

Hi Colin, the jig is actually to cut a stack of .8mm ply blanks to shape and cut out the hole for the spar - using a router.
It's really just two rib forms with appropriate trim for the router guide. I have considered that it could also clamp foam rib blanks, say half a dozen or so - they are 30mm wide on the Pouchel. I could then use a hot wire cutter take off the excess material using the rib forms as a guide.
Some of the foam ribs have full size .8mm ply glued both sides, others just have parts ribs reinforcing the foam around the spar hole.
