LAA Mag article 'Staying Attached'
Hi,
this month's LAA magazine (March 2012) has an interesting article by FD called 'Staying Attached' discussing detail design of fittings, and a footnote says that related a stress report sample has been made available on the LAA web site.
Can anyone see where it is as I can't find it, it's been a long day so perhaps I am just being blind or stupid?
If Brian reads this, how about publishing the article itself on the site too? If it was there as a pdf download as it would be easy to find for future reference. I'm hoping that there will be more of this sort of article from FD. I'm currently (if slowly) working on a couple of mod applications for my project and it is very helpful to see the likes of this in print.
regards
Colin

Hi Colin, there is another half to Francis' article that will run in the next issue. I'm glad you liked this slightly more techncal feature, I thought it well constructed so that the layman (like me) could readily understand it. We also have plans to add a section to Malcolm's Safety Spot now and again which takes a more in depth and technical look at certain maintenance or failure issues.
We may well add the two spar joint articles to the website as Engineering is keen to increase the design information that we currently provide.

Very interesting article in the magazine. I (like Colin) am interested in the technical and design side. One thing that struck me was whether the structural efficiency of the style of wing attachment in the article is better or worse than type of attachment when the two ends of the spar cross over and attach to each other (glider style?).
I've only glanced through it so far but it does look very useful and interesting, and timely as I'm just starting to make the metal fittings for my Bowers Flybaby project. However I like the balance of the magazine in terms of the range of articles between technical, reviews and so on. Nice work.

Aircraft Design Article
Just another vote in favour of more such articles.
In fact, what about a series on a/c design from the beginning, taking us through the whole process?
Thanks Francis and Brian.

Magazine Staff .
I second those thoughts ....We need far more leaning of the magazine towards Technical stuff .
We've had a good start with " Staying attached" by Francis .
However , especially welcome would be a "SERIES of Articles", as a REGULAR Running Feature , covering the whole Design process from the very Beginning ,... with respect to LAA requirements .( not microlights )
Particularly good if it were slanted towards the traditional , cable braced Bi-plane types .
Yours Hopefully ! ...John

Like the one in this months magazine by Richard Mole? I too would like design stuff to be a regular part of the magazine. Would set it apart from the other magazines, which are beginning to latch onto permit flying.
Why not microlights? Section S is only a simplification of CS-VLA.

Re: LAA Mag article 'Staying Attached'
There's nothing I'd like more than running a series of articles on designing an aircraft from first concept to complete aircraft, and I have discussed this with Francis on several occasions. We have also discussed the possibility of a series of LAA courses on aircraft design, following the same start to finish format. Francis likes the idea as much as I do, but it will be a time consuming commitment and time is something that our Engineering department do not have much spare of at the moment. The transfer of DH types following on from Austers, Jodels and Stampes is a labour intensive job, on top of everything else the team has to do to keep the existing fleet flying, mod applications and new design approvals but the idea is in there, albeit on the back burner at the moment. If I can find somebody else to take up the challenge I will. Richard Mole does a great job of submitting the occasional design article, and Francis has touched on it in some of his Engineering articles, like you I thirst for more and hope in time we can quench the thirst.

Hi Brian,
another interesting article from Richard, thanks for publishing that. I did recognise our Tailorcraft tailplane in one of the photos.
Right back at the beginning of this thread I was asking after the stress report sample mentioned in FD's article. Did that ever make it to the web site?
regards,
Colin

Re: LAA Mag article 'Staying Attached'
Just another vote of thanks for all the recent design and technical articles appearing in the mag.
It would be great to be able to share these more easily than is currently possible. For example John Corby (Corby Starlet / Corby Kestrel) was himself interested in reading the 'Staying Attached' article, so I had to scan it to share.
Wouldn't it be great resource if we could access the magazine articles online - much as the EAA does with their publications. I know these things take time to implement, but I look forward to it nonetheless.
Do keep all the great technical articles coming!
