The reason I say that many/most certified aircraft do not have filters is because in this context - 100 micron of less the gascolator does not count. If it has a mess - and many do not - then it will take out chumks of debris. The finest mesh I have seen was in my old Terrier - a wonderful turned brass basket with carefully soldered very fine mesh - probably good for particles down of close to 200 microns. To be fair a Gypsy's carb can swallow those bits easily!
The gascolator is essentially a water trap, it will allow large particles to settle out and it might stop big bits - if it has a mesh fitted. For a Rotax installation it does not filter the fuel to anything like the required quality - so you have to do that!
