Longeze Canopy Question

Post by Ken Fern » Thu Jan 10, 2013 9:14 am

I am working on the Comet restoration at Derby and we are trying to sort out a canopy latching mechanism. The original just used Tiger Moth type luggage locker catches on the inside which isnt too good as if flown solo you cant reach the rear one. Shuttleworth have used a fairly complicated set up on SS but it has been suggested I look into the type fitted to the Longeze as its said to be simple.
So my question is, can any owners or plans holders help us with the info please
Many thanks

Ken,

Take a look at the mechanisms used on some of the two seat gliders. K13 & Janus both have long, single piece and side hinged canopies. Also the parts should be easy to get.

The Rutan latch system is very good - reliable, simple and light - using 3 hooks linked with 2 rods with adjustment for a snug, accurate fit. No issues ref the latch design but the Rutan locking mechanism was rubbish. There is a simple mod that resolves that which I have used and it is extremely reliable.
If you wish I can send you a copy of the Rutan system and the mod.
Regards
Steve
