Can anyone recommend a suitable fabric for making sling seats from?

Also, what's the best stitch to use for such an application?

Have you thought of using sail material? I took a quick look on Ebay and there are several second hand sails available, this one at 99p currently!

Very strong, light and can be glued or sewn. decent sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch will do the job.
