Re: Farnborough Airspace
The only way I can see to stop the continuous attempts to exclude GA from vast volumes of airspace is to make airports pay for it. Here's my suggestion Take the APD paid by passengers at the major existing airports and divide it by the entire volume of airspace reserved for the same airports thus gi...

Re: 8.33hz radios
Well fortunately I will only be removing COM 2 when forced, so a single failure will make my a/c non-radio, ridiculous but Brussels knows best.

Re: 8.33hz radios
Just received EGU newsletter near the end of which is a section and I quote; "We have been informed that UK, Sweden, Finland and maybe Denmark and Norway will file an "article 14.4 exemption" to retain some frequencies as 25kHz for a limited time after 2018" Maybe we will at least be able to leave e...

Re: Southend Controlled Airspace
How about a political campaign to make airports pay at least some of their Government taxes based on the volume of airspace they require? If the costs were based on a formula that left the charges at the existing major UK airports unchanged by offsetting against passenger duty the airspace grabs of ...

Re: Farnborough Controlled Airspace
Yes in all probability, however the types who are prepared to pay Farnborough's current fees can cough up if they want to close the South East to VFR traffic alternatively they could use another airfield with less impact on others thereby forcing Farnborough to give up the airspace or go bust. Seems...

Re: Terrier Tailwheel
The tailwheel sounds non original, the original options were the standard castoring one or the "prestige" steerable one both fitted with a solid tyre bonded to the wheel. Care needs to be taken with american wheels as the rudder cables and fittings are very light weight not originally designed with ...

Re: Farnborough Controlled Airspace
Waded through the document, to me the only obvious conclusion to their own arguments is that Farnborough is in far too congested an area to operate any other than very occasional IFR traffic due to its proximity to Heathrow and Gatwick. Far from giving it control over an area north of Heathrow to so...

Re: 8.33hz radios
It also isn't strictly true that the only sets available are high end and of little interest to LAA members. Trig's new set retails for about £1250 and Funkwerk is about the same. They may become a little cheaper if the market becomes more competitive. No it isn’t cheap and I don’t want to fork out...

Re: 8,33 Radios
You could have a hunt round for an 810 which wouldn't cost anything to install and leave 8.33khz till forced, obviously the 810 would need to be cheap as it has a worthless junk date.

Re: 8.33hz radios
I am not sure hand held manufacturers will automatically seek approval for their 8.33Hz sets as they aren't required in the USA. The only approved 8.33Hz sets available are from small European manufacturers or American sets aimed at the high end private and commuter, executive market. For example th...

Re: Rotax and Avgas
Its odd how the CAA love quoting the "manufacturer" where following the advice is more onerous and expensive, however where following the manufacturer's advice is safer, easier and cheaper obviously the CAA prohibit following it.

Re: What has the Future Airspace Strategy done for us?
ChampChump, Sadly I've been cut up several times when inbound IFR by "unknown traffic". The result has been to go around under a period of high workload. If you don't want to see Southend getting a larger known traffic environment (e.g. Class D) as their IFR movements increase over time, what do su...

Re: VP Prop Maintenance
Historically a Notice 75 strip and inspection was carried out every 3 years costing between £1000 and £1500 assuming that no major parts other than the aforementioned seals etc required replacement. A friend has just had his 6 years from brand new american propeller overhauled after 100hrs TT , at a...

Well Brian, I too am an LAA member and operate an Annex 11 a/c on a national C of A and the CAA hasn't contacted me to find out what I think in their "consultation" process. The vagueness of what they are "consulting" on is also typical of an unaccountable organisation which continues to reinforce t...
