Northern White Pine?
Hi all. Before getting the drawings to the Chilton DW1 (and still to find out if I could fit inside without the use of lubricant) I had been considering the MiniMax. My questions is, as the MiniMax plans call for Northern White Pine, and it doesn't seem to be available off the shelf from the usual p...

Re: Sherwood Ranger - ballistic parachute testing
Interesting test. I believe (I may be wrong) that firing the chute is pretty much the coup de grace for the aircraft. The forces involved in returning to earth via that method are the end for the airframe, and I would suspect at least a hospital visit for the pilot/pax (shock, check up, monitoring) ...

Re: Availability of Spruce
Thanks for your reply chaps, I'm blown away by the amount of information given freely here, worth it's weight in gold I'm sure! I have made initial contact with my local inspector, but I was still at a very early stage in the process (just joined LAA) and hadn't really made any firm decisions, so I ...

Re: Storing wood
Hi Colin. Thank you very much for your reply. As you can imagine I have 1001 questions, as I'm sure all first-time builders have. Just trying to avoid some of the potential pratfalls. I'm doing my homework and trying to gen up as much as possible, have ordered some books on the subject of aircraft w...

Re: Availability of Spruce
Thanks chaps, I am determined to find a supplier who can quote sensible prices and that is UK based. I'm in the process of reading up as much as I can about wood, and picking brains wherever possible. I met a 'high end' cabinet maker tonight who has a supply of spruce, white northern pine etc etc, a...

Availability of Spruce
Hello all. As a prospective builder, I find myself rather perturbed by the availability, or rather lack of availability, of decent Sitka Spruce, or Douglas Fir. What happens when these materials are just not available anymore, or become (more) prohibitively expensive? Do we just stop building? Is th...

Storing wood
Hi all. Just a question on wood storage. I will (possibly) be storing my project wood in an unheated shed which is dry, and has good ventilation. I keep tools in there and they don't go rusty, so moisture levels seem OK. Obviously it's cold in winter, and hot in summer, but will this cause me major ...

Re: What is a good workshop?
Hi, and thanks for all your replies! Very useful and informative. I think it's great that i can benefit from the experience of builders who have 'been there, done that' Can anyone give me an idea of how warm the inside of a structure has to be for storing/gluing wood? I know people who have built in...

Re: What is a good workshop?
Thanks Richard The shed has one door, and it's just a normal size door, not the up and over garage type. So I'm basically stuck with what I have. I think I will be resigned to constructing smaller parts in here, or in the attic until such time that a bigger space present's itself! So it's down to ho...

What is a good workshop?
Hi all Firstly an introduction. I'm a 38 year old chap, CPL with FI rating, working as a Firefighter, and I'm looking to learn some new skills. Just joined the LAA, and I am going to be building a MiniMax 1600R. My question for the forum is that I have an issue with regard to a suitable space to bui...
