New LAA Stainless Steel Registration Plate
I see that the LAA have re thought the aluminium plate and replaced it with a Stainless Steel Registration Plate, which complies with the legal requirements. Ignoring the obvious question of why was it not made of SS in the first place, do we know if there is a plan to make this plate compulsory for the LAA fleet? At £28.75 it is a lot more than I paid for my “legal minimum” plate.

Hi Rod, The registration plate is a nicely made item, certainly better than a 'bare minimum' plate. Horses for courses - there will be those who will want to fit one to their aircraft and those who will prefer to go basic.
There are no plans to insist that the LAA plate must be used, why would there be?

I find it strange that the plate contains owners name when the only legal requirement in the ANO is for the registration marks. It was PFA Chiltern Strut against John Walker then Head of Engineering that persuaded the CAA to drop the owners name from the plate since we proved that ICAO did not require it.
Ironic that LAA try to introduce someting that the members got removed back in the 80's
Owners change during the lifetime of an aircraft so this plate should be restricted to fixed lifetime data.
We seem to have a mix of the FAA requirement for a manufacturers Constructors number plate and the ICAO Fireproof plate. Put the manufacturers name or builders name since that is possibly useful i.e. put Built By instead of Owner.
Also why is the PFA LAA serial number missed off as this is a permanent piece of data.

Wild guess, the plate would then need replacing by each owner, so you sell more plates? Thinking about it, if the plate contains the previous owners name, do you have to replace the plate? Could lead to some serious confusion if you did not and had an accident.

Rod you are right. If the plate does not get replaced and the aircraft comes to a firey end two owners later; PC plod might be knocking on your door at the dead of night to inform your wife of your demise.
The CAA accepted the removal of owners details from the plate even though this was before the advent of G-INFO since police could via their radio find to the current owner data plus address quicker than poking around looking for a fireproof plate.
Rod in your case the plate does not lend itself as a c/n plate for a Jodel or other factory built aircraft under the LAA permit system though since many are of USA origin they should have the manufacturer's FAA c/n plate fitted which from my recall are not fitted to a Jodel.

Why on earth would you want Mogas, unless you nicked the washing machine in the first place, weighed it in for scrap, clip clopped back to your campsite and put a few rivets in your RV12.......
